Road safety

Long weekend: extra patrols on State Highways 1 and 16

Expect to see more of us on the road this long weekend. Road policing staff will be running checkpoints for breath and drug testing from 3pm Friday until midnight Monday.

Checkpoints can pop up anywhere, but we'll be focusing on State Highway 1 north of Albany and State Highway 16 through the western suburbs. Both are busy with holiday traffic and have long stretches of roadworks.

Before you head off

  • Check your warrant of fitness and registration are current.
  • Plan a break every two hours on longer trips.
  • Keep to 50 km/h through the roadworks on SH16, even when no one is working.
  • If you've been drinking, leave the car. Get a taxi, a sober mate, or stay over.

Saw someone driving dangerously?

Pull over somewhere safe and call 111. Tell us the plate, the direction of travel, and what the vehicle looks like. Don't try to follow them.
